2009-01-03 Zalgiris scorches Ventspils by 51

It was nothing but a demolition of Ventspils' wall on early Saturday evening as Zalgiris left no hope for the opponents from Latvia and destroyed them at home by as much as 51 points - 117:66.
The visitors did not let the opponents to crush them from early on. Ventspils played really well in the first quarter and was trailing by just a couple of points for the most part of the time. After a jumper by Akselis Vairogs the Latvians cut their deficit to 2 points (14:15), while the first period ended 21:18 up by Zalgiris.
Zalgiris got the double-digit lead after more than 2 minutes of play in the second quarter, when Eurelijus Zukauskas threw a hammer down - 29:18. His teammates felt the rhythm and it was kind of a party out there in Kaunas Sports Hall. Numerous of players penetrated to the basket at will and the score at the halftime was 42:26.
The blowout continued in the second half and as the time moved on, it became clear that Ventspils will not be able to avoid the pounding. Late in the third quarter Zalgiris got 34 points lead and the fourth period became just a formality for both teams. Even if it was completelly unnecesary for Zalgiris to concentrate and increase its lead, it still wanted to snatch a thunderous win and the hosts certainly did that.
Paulius Jankunas (13 rebs.) and Tadas Klimavicius (12 rebs.) both had 26 points, E.Zukauskas added 16. Tyrone Brazelton scored 19 for Ventspils.
