2008-11-26 Nevezis comes up short over Valmiera
A poor third quarter did not let Nevezis to make an upset against Valmiera. The Lithuanians lost 70:75 at home and it was the third win for the Latvian team.
Both teams played very equally during the first quarter and after 4 minutes of play the score was tied at 7:7 as Valdas Dabkus made a lay-up. The biggest difference in this period was 4 points. V.Dabkus was unstoppable nailing 13 points in the first quarter, but Nevezis couldn't get an advantage and was trailing 19:20.
After Sandis Amolins' three-pointer Valmiera increased its lead to 4 points (25:21), but the Lithuanians scored 7 straight points without an answer and overbalanced the score in their favour - 28:25. Players went to the locker-rooms as the result was even - 38:38.
Nevezis felt difficulties executing things on the offensive end in the second half and that was certainly the cause of a good defense by the Latvians. Late in the third period Valmiera built 7 points lead and closed this quarter leading 54:47.
Valmiera increasd its lead up to 9 points in the fourth quarter (58:49), but Nevezis was able to come back in this game, when Povilas Sakinis connected two shots at the stripe - 59:62. 49 seconds left in a game Benas Veikalas made two free throws and it was a 3-point game once again - 67:70. 16 seconds left B.Veikalas cut it to two points, but O.Virsis increased it to 5 and left no chances for Nevezis to make another run.
Ingus Bankevics scored 22 points for the winners, Ronald Clark added 20 and 9 rebounds. V.Dabkus and P.Sakinis collected 15 points apiece.
