TU/Rock made history of Estonian basketball, beating ASK Riga 77:68 in SEB BBL third place game and achieved the best possible place behind two European top level teams – Zalgiris an rytas.
The hosts were led by Tanoka Beard who scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. But it was the Georgian duet, Giorgi Tsintsadze and Viktor Sanikidze who appeared as the true heroes, combining last 9 points for the hosts. Tsintsadze nailed a crucial three-pointer with 55 seconds left to play and made it 73:67. Sanikidze scored 4 last points of the game. Tsintsadze had 15 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Sanikidze – 12 points and 11 rebounds.
ASK was led by Ernests Kalve – 15 points, 12 of them in the 1st quarter. Raitis Grafs made one of his best performances this season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Aigars Vitols had 13 points.
The hosts outrebounded opponents 45:21 (!). The head coach of ASK Riga, Donaldas Kairys said that these numbers were the main reason of the loss. "We were outrebounded and, having such a short bench, the foul trouble killed us at the end of the game, leaving us without substitutions' rotation
The hosts started the game in a pretty modest way, making only 1 of their 8 first shots. During first 7 minutes, hosts also made 5 turnovers and 7 fouls, allowing ASK go ahead 8:0 and 18:3. ASK won the 1st quarter 29:11. "They succeeded in everything at the beginning," both Indrek Visnapuu, the coach of TU/Rock, and Giorgi Tsintsadze mentioned later. "But what's most important is that today we played three good quarters and these were three last quarters not like yesterday when we played good basketball for the three first quarters."
In 2nd quarter, TU/Rock finally woke up and started the quarter with a 14:0 run in only 3 minutes. ASK held a narrow lead until with 1:30 to play in the first half, Marek Doronin nailed a three-pointer to take the hosts ahead 37:35. Uvis Helmanis answered with a triple and ASK won the first half 39:37.
In 3rd quarter, Tanoka Beard scored 6 in a row to take the hosts ahead 43:41. Grafs answered with only his third three-pointer of the this season and Runkauskas took ASK ahead for the last time today - 46:45. Beard, Kullamae and Tein made a 7:0 run and TU/Rock led 56:50 with a quarter to go.
Although it seemed that the 4th quarter was going to be a pure formality, the Latvian team proved contrary. With 6 minutes to play, the hosts led 63:55 but Mazutis, Grafs and Vitols made a 8:0 run in only a minute to even the game 63:63. Then, Giorgi Tsintsadze rose above everybody else. He made a couple of hard baskets, Tanel Tein added a three-pointer and Tsintsadze's three-pointer with 55 seconds to play, decided the fate of the game.
