2010-02-27 At the end Zalgiris turned out to be better than VEF Riga

The first half of the game was rather equal with a small lead by Zalgiris. After the half-time VEF Riga took over the lead but in the final quarter Zalgiris showed their potential and won the whole game with the result 72:77 (18:20, 18:22, 28:12, 8:23).

The game start was equal as both teams exchanged their shots and during the first five minutes the result was tied four times. Then VEF Riga gained a small lead of 16:11 but then their offence started to struggle. Zalgiris on the other side organized effective offensive play and made a run of 0:9 thus taking over the lead. The result was 16:20 Zalgiris being ahead. But the final word in this quarter belonged to VEF Riga and after the first ten minutes the result was 18:20.


In the second quarter Zalgiris could not score and VEF took over the lead of the game - 27:22 VEF realized three three-pointers as once Aleksejevs and two times Bankevics were precise. But the lead of VEF was not for a long time as Zalgiris again regained the lead 30:33 and further on even 32:40. This was the biggest lead of team Zalgiris in this game. However till the end of the first half of the game VEF Riga played back few points and the result was 36:42.


After the big break VEF Riga equalized the game 42:42 and further on 46:46. Then Zalgiris offence slowed down and they were not as productive anymore. On the other hand VEF Riga scored their points and increased the lead. Minute before the end of the third quarter VEF Riga gained their biggest lead in the game – plus 10 points thus making the result 64:54. The result in the remaining minute did not change and before the final ten minutes it was plus ten for Latvians.


The final ten minutes started with a shock for VEF as Zalgiris scored the first ten points of the final quarter and it was tied 64:64. Then it was again equal 68:68 but Zalgiris did not wanted to clear out the winner in the final seconds of the game thus they made a run of 0:7 and making the result 68:75. VEF Riga took a time-out but it was already too late as there was left to play less than two minutes in this game. At the end Zalgiris hold their lead and celebrated a victory 72:77.
